《论语》中多次简略地记载了孔子以“仁”为核心、不避贵贱亲疏的举贤禅让思想,并以圣君举贤,且在年迈而“嗣子”不肖时禅让之以天下,为尚贤的至高境界;他同时主张“唐虞禅,夏后殷周继,其义一也”。孔子的上述思想,开启了战国时期诸子热烈探讨举禅问题的先河。汉以后改朝换代,多经历过所谓禅让典仪,而其禅让诏令文书所用话语,每每可追溯到孔孟之书,足见孔门举贤禅让思想理论历史影响之深远。
