中国历史悠久,年代邈远,绘画之事,发明既早,繁衍分歧,不可究诘关于绘画之书籍,又复浩如烟海,其编辑方法,大都不合于科学之组织,虽间有一二种秩然有序者,然多陷于一偏,求一完美之绘画通史亦不可得。日人大村西崖有《支那绘画小史》(吴县张一钧译),中村不折、小鹿青云有《支那绘画史》(商务印书馆有潘天寿译本),一则失之太简,一则夹叙夹议,眉目不清。吾师陈衡恪教授北京美专时,曾有《中国绘画史》讲义,虽依中村之本,而多所增损,惟取便初学,本非著作,吾师归道山后,始由不才代为刊行,当时以校订荒疏,诸多谬误。其后吾友郑昶之《中国画学全史》出版,实为空前之巨著,议论透辟, China has a long history, far away from the age, the painting matter, invented both early, multiply differences, can not be studied 诘 on the painting of the book, and a vast expanse of smoke, the editing methods, mostly out of science organization, although there are one or two kinds of rank Orders, but more trapped in one partial, seeking a perfect history of painting is not available.
