大气科学不仅是研究大气状态及其变化的规律和成因的一门科学,而且是研究大气与其周围的海洋、陆面、冰雪和生物圈相互作用的动力、物理和化学过程的一门综合性科学。在21世纪到来之际,回顾已经过去的20世纪科学的成就,这对于新世纪中科学的发展具有特别重大的意义。在20世纪,由于大气观测技术的不断完善,特别是空基遥感技术的发展和应用,以及计算机技术的迅速发展,大气科学取得非常迅速的发展,它已成为一门拥有众多分支学科的综合性科学。在20世纪这100年中,在大气探测、大气环流与大尺度动力学、数值天气预报与数值试验、中小尺度气象学、大气物理、大气环境与大气化学、中层大气、气候系统动力学与气候预测、全球变化等方面的研究都取得重大进展。这些进展回顾如下:
