From Ariane 3 to Ariane 4, some improvements have been made to the first stage launch vehicle to increase the carrying capacity of the synchronous transfer orbit payload from 2,900 to 4,300 kg. An additional tank was lengthened to increase propellant charge from 148 to 220. Four liquid boosters filled with 36 GT propellant were bundled in parallel around a primary rocket. Each booster is equipped with a 670kW thrust Venus engine. In order to shorten the development cycle and carry out the first flight test by the end of 1985, the new liquid booster was designed with the best possible Arian 1 experience.
