桐城文士戴名世、张廷玉、方苞、刘大櫆、姚鼐等皆在《儒林外史》中投有镜像:戴名世“《南山集》案”是“《高青邱集》案”的一个重要本事;马二先生选《程墨》论时文的观点,与方苞等桐城派作家观点类似;娄三、娄四公子是否为桐城张氏兄弟存疑,但所云“太保”即指张廷玉;刘大櫆与吴檠相善,其所记吴檠纳姬事,是解读小说“杜慎卿江郡纳姬”事的重要依据,且刘大櫆、叶酉、姚范等桐城人,对此事持同情态度;杜慎卿褒永乐而贬方孝孺的思想,以及小说褒扬反对程、朱的庄尚志之言行,均与姚鼐的思想存有分歧。桐城人在《儒林外史》中的镜像颇有些不好,民国初学者推全椒而抑桐城亦与此相关。
