In the United States, the packaging industry is currently the largest user of aluminum sheet. Rigid Containers Aluminum alloys are widely used in the manufacture of beer and beverage cans due to their excellent metallurgical properties and recyclability. Through a combination of improvements in tank construction, alloys and processing technology, it is possible to successfully produce lighter aluminum cans. This article discusses some important metallurgical assumptions that have been made for the production of thin and light weight cans and lids and for the production of thin sheets of sufficient strength and formability. The microstructures, work-hardening and strain rate sensitivity of 3004 and 5182 sacrificial gold were compared. Although it is difficult to actually measure the inherent formability of a can blank, the relationship between mechanical properties and formability is proposed.
