近几年来,人们对新材料的发明给予了很大的关注。材料发展了,就有可能制造具有新的装置和更高性能的机器,而要想使这种机器进一步发展,又需要开发更为优良的材料。由此可知,材料与机器,装置的进步是互相促进的。在新材料的开发上,需要资金,并伴有很大的风险,何况要从事弄清大量材料的实质的基础研究的话,就不得不依赖国立研究机构和大学的研究开发。值得庆幸的是,在举世瞩目的筑波科学城,集中了45所大学和国立研究机构,其中包括科学技术厅的金属材料枝术研究所,无机材质研究所和工业技术院的纤维高分子材料研究所,真可以说是新技术诞生的极好的场所。
