Hantaan virus (HV) is a single-stranded minus-strand RNA virus belonging to the Bunyaviridae family. The natural host of the HV in the Western Hemisphere is a murine rodent. People are infected by inhaling the aerosol of the infected feces, urine and saliva. Some strains of HV can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). HFRS occurs mainly in Asia and Europe. Another condition caused by HV is cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) with a mortality rate of about 40%.
