目前,金属染黑主要采用氧化处理方法。这种方法用于钢、铜合金和铝的表面处理。尽管金属氧化处理的方法完全不同,但都具有下列共同点:总是要藉助金属表面层形成氧化膜。由于这种膜厚度比较薄,故氧化处理时不致改变零件尺寸。这具有极其重要的实用意义。钢和铜合金可分别用磁性氧化铁(Fe_3O_4)和氧化铜作为染黑膜。在铝合金上形成一种无色氧化铝薄膜;由于该薄膜具有较强的吸附作用,利用有机涂料易于染成黑色。
