土工离心模型试验早在30年代美、苏两国已有萌芽,到70年代有了相当的发展,其原因是与大型或新型岩土工程(包括军事工程),如高土石坝、海洋采油平台、大规模港湾工程及地下工程的出现,以及量测技术高度发展,为高速运转的模型(如60m/s)的微小变化(如位移0.1mm)的量测提供了可行技术等有关。目前国内土工离心模型试验专门人才尚少。南京水利科学研究所对此项工作进行了探索,曾与有关单位协作,采用国内材料器件,因陋就简地设计研制出有关设备,在1982年进行了首次土工离心模型试验。
