形声作为“六书”之一,从甲骨文时期发展到自觉的阶段后逐渐发展成为汉字最主要的构形方式,因其被体认为是“六书”中最理想的构形方式而逐渐“孳乳浸多”为汉字最能产的构形方式。目前关于古汉字形声字的研究大致可分为三个方面,即理论研究、构形研究以及上古音研究。通过对现阶段古汉字形声字的研究概况的总结可以发现目前关于古汉字形声字的研究大部分是关于构形的研究,而对于古汉字形声字的理论研究偏少,用古汉字形声字对上古音的研究还有很大的空间。所以古汉字形声字的进一步研究应该重在理论研究和用古汉字形声字对上古音的研究方面。而这些研究需要有可靠的材料支撑,所以当前重要的任务就是古汉字形声字谱系的建构,对古汉字阶段形声字做一次分时代、分地域的整理,从而为古汉字形声字的理论研究和用古汉字形声字对上古音的研究提供可靠的材料支撑。
