柏是我国栽培历史悠久的树种之一。早自殷代起,即植柏以志纪念。《论语》云:“殷人以柏”。《春秋》曰:“天子坟三仞,树以松,诸候半之,树以柏”。至今仍有在寺院、庙堂、墓茔栽柏的习惯。很多古籍中都有关于柏的记栽,《尔雅》称椈,《说文》:“柏,鞠也。《花镜》:“柏,一名仓官,一名椈。《诗经》、《书经》、《周礼》、《图经本草》、《本草别录》等书皆称为柏。古书上称柏,多数指侧柏,如《花镜》曰:
