The joint venture consisting of Bilfinger + Berger in Germany, Chor Kanchoug in Thailand and Kumagai Gumi in Japan and Tokyu in Japan has won the first of three contracts for civil engineering design and construction in the Bangkok Metro. The $ 9.4 billion contract for the southern section of the metro includes two tunnels with 11km of length and nine underground stations. Subway construction is expected to start early this year and be completed by 2001. The main designer is Maunsell Znternational. Tunnels with a diameter of 5.7m will be ground penetrated by a soil-pressure balance shield at a depth of 25m below the ground for soft to hard clay so as to limit ground settlement. The tunneling project will begin within 12 to 18 months. The number of shields and suppliers have not yet been decided.
