蔡元培的第一手棋,走的就是《新青年》这个新布局。当时陈独秀创办《新青年》不久,请来了西方的“德先生”与“赛先生”来救治中国的痼疾。在没有硝烟的战场上,他纵横笔墨,激扬文字,“宁忍过去国粹之消亡,而不忍现在及将来之民族,不适世界之生存而归于削灭也”。蔡元培被其敢言的热情与能言的本事所折服,以至认为北大文科学长非他莫属。
