玉兰种子休眠的直接原因是胚未分化成熟,采收时仍处于球形胚或更早阶段。经约四个月层积处理,才分化成具备子叶,胚根、胚芽的鱼雷形胚,并继续生长,完成后熟作用。真叶原基分化较早,在胚分化后生长阶段,胚根突破种皮较早,而子叶展开较迟。胚乳组织丰富,贮藏物质颗粒状,表层胚乳细胞具有生活细胞特性。胚乳组织留存时间较长。
