五四新文化运动打破了文言文一统天下的格局,呼吁文学改良,挣脱八股束缚,提倡更有活力和表现力的白话文。自五四运动以后第一个十年(1920—1930年),白话文在小说、散文、诗歌、戏剧文学等方面,取得了很大的进步,但在文学作品和一般学术著作之外的文化领域仍存在文言文的残余,即使在白话文学里,虽然有一部分为人民群众欢迎的好作品,但是,仍有不少作品连“明白如话”都没有做到,常常乱七八糟地夹杂着不少文言的字眼和句子,滥用欧化的句法、日本的句法,造成严重违背现代中国人口语习惯
