The implementation of digital video (multi-purpose) optical disks (DVDs) requires a writing system to process video, audio, auxiliary images and other program material before making a disc. This article describes the features of this new DVD authoring system and the special DVD auxiliary image program material. Writing system consists of four functional devices: story converter, the source signal encoder, the preparation of the effect of pre-controller and verifier. The article describes the role of these functional devices. Plot changer introduces “navigation” data for program material so viewers can interactively operate and control program playback while playing a program; source signal encoders use various compression and non-compression encoding methods to convert video, Audio and ancillary images are coded; the effect pre-controller is programmed to produce a data stream that conforms to the compression system and DVD format standards; the verifier’s capabilities include replay simulation and data flow verification. The DVD offers new image display capabilities such as multi-view selection and “panning” selection of the screen area for wide-screen programming. The authoring system includes these functions in the DVD data. The authoring system uses a new bit rate control method, a variable bit rate encoding method, thereby enabling the system to produce the best picture quality while making all the data optimally suited to the capacity of DVD discs. The system developed a two-pass video encoding method that first analyzed program material and then optimized variable bit rate (VBR) bitrate control in the final encoding. Before recording a stream to a DVD disc, the authoring system has the ability to thoroughly verify and verify it.
