中国古代称得上“真正”的形纹艺术(纹饰)形成于夏商之际,以刻在青铜器上的“兽面”纹为代表。从形纹艺术的萌生至真正形纹艺术的形成,经过了一个漫长的历程。本文认为,中国史前形纹艺术应当萌生于原始社会中不再与人的衣、食、住、行等物质生产活动直接相关的、开始注入人的意识的自觉的、与人的精神活动密切相连的、用作巫术祭祀的图腾或寄托了人类观念形态的、具有独立价值与象征意义的纹饰,由此至进入人类文明时期后(以文字的出现为标志)的青铜器上的兽面纹饰,就构成了中国史前形纹艺术的主要演进历程。
