The crude kelp extract was a white solid substance prepared by commercial cold-water immersion in seaweed and precipitated with 95% ethanol, mainly containing alginic acid. We discovered that on the basis of its preventive effect on acute radiation damage in mice, we conducted a preventive test of nearly 400 mice in batches with four doses. When the radiation dose was 900 rads and the kelp extract aqueous solution was injected intraperitoneally at a dose of 50-125 mg/kg half an hour before irradiation, the viability of the mice could be increased by 22.5 to 49.0%. The survival rate increased with the increase of the administration dose (the P value of each dose and prevention group was lower than that of the control group.
