Large-scale deforestation, especially deforestation in the tropics, is one of the crimes committed in our time. I will study deforestation in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar, where the modern history of forest development is relatively rich and reliable. Most scholars now agree that humankind is causing climate change, but when did human influence become the dominant factor? If we look at recent literature, we get the impression that large-scale forest development in South-East Asia started at 20 In the 1950s and 1960s, this meant that the human impact had been very limited until then. But the period before 1950 has not been well studied. I will mainly talk about reforestation information, which has not drawn much attention, either before or after 1950. I will also look at some Western European countries as well as Japan and China to provide a comparative perspective.
