延胡索为常用中药,始载于《开宝本草》,别名:元胡、玄胡索。该药被广泛地用于临床,具有活血,利气,止痛的功效,常用于治疗胸胁、脘腹疼痛,闭经痛经,产后瘀阻,跌扑肿痛等疾病。医家曾说:“心痛欲死,速觅元胡。”证明其在临床药用上确有良好的功效。延胡索为罂粟科植物延胡的干燥块茎。夏初茎叶枯萎时采挖,除去须根,洗净,置沸水中煮至恰无白心时取出。以个大、饱满、质坚实及断面色黄者为佳。延胡索的产地属浙江最佳。其性状呈不规则的扁球形,直径0.5～1.5cm。表面黄色或黄褐色,有不规则网状皱纹。顶端有略凹陷的茎痕,底部常有疙瘩状突起,质硬而脆,断面黄色,角质样,有蜡样光泽,气微,味苦。北京人卫中药饮片厂按《北京市中药炮制规范》的标准生产醋延胡索已多
