中国99式主战坦克的研制是在国务院、中央军委的领导下,在国家“七五”计划中被列为武器研制重点项目,在“八五”计划中又被列为军队四大重点装备项目之一。经过近10年的研发,耗资数亿元人民币,于1999年正式定型,投入小批量生产,现已正式装备我军装甲部队。王哲荣院士这样评价中国ZTZ-99式主战坦克:“我国坦克的发展经过三代人数十年的艰苦努力与拼搏,达到现今这么一种水平,实属不易。”另据中国北方车辆研究所所长毛明博士介绍:“中国ZTZ-99式主战坦克是我国的第三代主战坦克,也是目前我军装备的最新型主战坦克,其总体性能处于世界先进水平。”
