The exhaust phase has a great influence on the performance of a two-stroke engine. If the exhaust phase can change with the engine speed, it can improve its performance over a wide range. The Yamaha Power Valve System (YPVS) uses a valve in the exhaust passage to increase engine power, and although it withstands extremely high thermal loads in the exhaust passage, it can vary the exhaust phase as the engine speed changes. This article discusses the structure of the Yamaha Power Valve System and how it works, and its role in increasing engine power. In order to clarify why the engine power can be increased, a series of gas supply ratio and gas supply efficiency tests and measurements are also discussed.
