古代小说家创作小说的主要目的在于:劝善惩恶,教化人心;传播知识,娱乐性情等。这正体现出古代小说家作为士的属性和责任。作为士的一员,古代小说家摆脱不了道统和政统的约束,其小说作品也反映出道统和政统两方面的要求。古代小说家在总体上被士歧视,为了让广大之士承认自己是士,又不被加以贬低,他们就在小说创作中愈要担当起士的职责,体现出士的精神来。综观中国小说史,古代小说家正是通过小说创作来为小说争地位,为小说家争取士的名份的。
