This study uses questionnaires to interview 295 Taiwanese elderly people over the age of 60, mainly discussing the television usage behavior, television authenticity, depression and the intertwined social interaction among the elderly. The study found that, although elderly people spend considerable time watching television daily, the length of time spent watching TV and the type of program they watch does not affect their melancholy mood. However, in addition to the significant correlation between old people’s perceptions of television and old people’s feelings of depression, the old people’s perception of television is also significantly correlated with the quasi-social interaction of television roles. That is, older people who have a higher degree of realism in the television show a higher degree of depression than social networks involved in their favorite characters. They also identify more with their favorite characters and are more concerned with their favorite characters.
