Vosper Thornycroft (VT) Ltd. of the United Kingdom has signed a contract with the Royal Navy for the design and manufacture of land-based anti-ship missile systems for use in the defense of the Strait of Gibraltar. This completely autonomous new weapon system that can be transported from land, sea and air to the coast launch site is based on the Flying Fish MM-38 surface-to-air missile and its export model is known as the Excalibur. The contract includes the development and production of construction vehicles and all other facilities normally provided by ships. The system also retains the original Flying Fish’s ability to launch on a floating platform. Land-based anti-ship missile systems, while not a new type of weapon, pose a great threat to surface ships equipped with advanced surface-to-surface missiles. Even if found, the land-based system is hardly attacked by surface missiles. Land-based anti-ship missiles are not easily attacked
