华罗庚先生曾说过:“宇宙之大,粒子之微,火箭之速,化工之巧,地球之变,日用之繁,无处不用数学。”精辟地阐述了数学在现实生活中的广泛应用,大到宏观的天体运动,小至微观的质子、中子的研究,以及人们的吃、穿、住、行,都离不开数学。《数学课程标准》说:“运用数学的思维方式观察、分析现实社会,去解决日常生活和其他学科学习中的问题,增强应用数学的意识”。新课程标准和新教材,注重于数学在社会生活中的应用,力图使数学知识更贴近于学生的生活,学生学习数学知识和数学方法
