The Japanese economy, which enjoyed steady growth in the past five years, began a sharp decline in mid-1991, with a reduction in private-owned factories and equipment investment and a reduction in personal consumption. The demand for steel, especially for the construction and automotive industries, has also been reduced, a situation that forces steelmakers to adjust their product catalogs. As a result, crude steel production in 1991 dropped from the previous year’s level to 109 Mt. In part because of the gradual increase in production and management costs during the period of economic development, the economic benefits of steel mills in 1991 have obviously declined. However, the costs for research and development have risen. Table 1 ~ Table 6 for the latest statistics of Japan’s steel industry.
