This essay criticizes six Chinese translations of a monologue in Shakespeare’s The Poetic Drama “Richard III” (The Life and Death of Richard III). Due to the lack of understanding of the simplicity of the original text and the failure to properly use the native language, the translator uses many redundant words that do not conform to the Chinese usage and can not convey the beautiful language features and artistic style of the original text. Here, the author proposes a new method of translating Shakespeare’s plays, that is, translating an English syllable into one Chinese character and trying to close the original sentence structure and depth to ensure that the Shakespeare works are beautiful and graceful.
