The electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of sputtered ZnS: TbF_x films were investigated. Brightness and EL spectra strongly depend on x. The highest brightness is obtained at x = 1, compared with the EL and PL of the standard sample. We conclude that Tb exists as a synthesis center at x = 1. This center consists of Zn instead of Tb and interstitial F. It gives higher EL efficiency. In the case of x = 3, TbF_x is incorporated as a molecular center into ZnS, which gives low EL efficiency.
