Alfalfa is Canada’s most valuable leguminous pasture. But in the eastern part of Canada, everyone is concerned about the problem of its poor durability. This is mainly due to its poor ability to wintering, often caused by freezing. Apica was developed directly to meet the needs of ranchers for a more permanent, high yield alfalfa cultivar. Source and Breeding Abbey was bred from the Canadian Agricultural Research Station at St. Fluss in Québec. The cultivation of this cultivated species started in the winter of 1974, a very cold winter. The original parent clones (56 strains)
