豫西禹县煤田位于华北地台南部、秦岭构造带的北侧,是华北晚古生代聚煤盆地南带中的重要煤田之一。南带是从豫西至皖北呈东西向延展的条带,晚古生代煤系的聚煤条件和特征兼有华北和华南的特点,表现为连续沉积的含煤地层时代延续长,煤系厚度大,含煤层位多,海相和半咸水动物化石和植物化石都很丰富。含煤地层包括晚石炭世太原组、早二叠世早期山西组,与华北面貌一致,而早二叠世晚期到晚二叠世早期的上、下石盒子组也含可采煤层则与华南情况相当,成煤植物亦属潮湿的热带、亚热带气候区的华夏植物群。因此豫西——皖北一带的晚古生代含煤沉积素有“北型南相”煤系之称,早在1964年北京地质学院煤田地质专业师生在煤炭部125、126队的支持下,实测过大风口剖面并进行生物地层划分
