Determination of erythrocyte cholinesterase (ChE) activity has been widely used for medical monitoring and poisoning of workers exposed to organophosphate insecticides. To reduce variation and false-negative results of ChE determinations among individuals, the authors first applied a field-based study of new instruments capable of simultaneous determination of ChE and Hb, and corrected the ChE assay with Hb concentrations. The study population consisted of 23 workers who produced hexachlorobenzene, DDT and methyl parathion, with an average age of 36 years and a working age of 3 months to 14 years.
