Researchers at the EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) project in the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, started a two-step synthetic petroleum sulfonate study about ten years ago based on the paraffinic properties of Pennsylvania crude oil. In the first step, hydrocarbons (mainly straight-chain paraffins and naphthenes) are vapor-phase oxidized. In the second step, the oxidation products are sulfonated with sulfur trioxide to obtain petroleum sulfonates for chemical flooding. This technology route uses less expensive alkanes instead of more expensive aromatic hydrocarbons as raw materials to produce petroleum sulfonates, arousing the concern and interest of oil-field chemists around the world, including our own.
