金塘岛位于舟山群岛西南部,是舟山群岛中的第四大岛。地处中国海岸线中心,紧连甬江和钱塘江入海口,是南北海运和远东国际航线之要冲,东距舟山本岛最近岸线6.25公里,南与宁波北仑港相距3.5公里。该岛东、北、南三面环山,唯西侧海滩受海潮侵蚀,地形特点与其他岛屿不同,故俗语称:“舟山田包山,唯有金塘山包田。”唐朝时,当地居民在西侧筑起两条大塘(今大浦塘的内塘),塘内海涂久耕成沃土,年年丰收。该塘造福后代,故美称“金塘”。
