White Paper on Grain Security Released
China recently published the white paper Food Security in China， in which it states that China now has enough food to feed its population of nearly 1.4 billion， and has remarkably improved its people’s nutrition and quality of life.
According to the white paper， China’s per capita food output is maintaining an above the world average. Currently China’s per capita food output is around 470 kilograms， growing by 14 percent from 414 kilograms in 1996 when China published its first white paper on food –The Grain Issue in China， and by 126 percent from 209 kilograms in 1949， when the PRC was founded. This is higher than the world average.
Per unit yield has significantly increased. The yields per hectare for rice， wheat， and corn in 2017 were 6，916.9 kilograms， 5，481.2 kilograms， and 6，110.3 kilograms respectively， which were 50.1 percent， 55.2 percent， and 6.2 percent higher than the world average respectively.
Total food output has also seen a steady increase. China’s total food output had reached near 660 million tons in 2018， nearly six times that in 1949.
Currently China meets 95 percent of its own needs for grain， laying down a solid material foundation for maintaining national food security， promoting socioeconomic development， and safeguarding long-term peace and stability.
In the end， the greater and betterquality food supply has resulted in improved nutrition for the population. The Chinese now have more choices in what they eat and have a healthier diet.
China Develops World’s Largest Cabin for Deep-sea Manned Submersible
China has developed and completed the manned cabin for a new deepsea manned submersible capable of carrying three people deeper than 10，000 meters. This cabin has the largest space and carrying capacity among manned myriameter （10，000 meters） cabins worldwide. The core component of the deep-sea manned submersible has recently passed through hydrostatic pressure-test assessments and obtained approval for the vehicle’s integration unit.
When completed， the submersible will be able to plunge deep down into the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean， the deepest trench in the world， and allow China to carry out scientific research in the deepest reaches of the ocean.
Further work， including the installation and integration of devices in and outside the cabin， is still underway， according to Liu Shuai， general constructor of the submersible. It is estimated that it will take more than 10 hours for the submersible to travel to and from the 10，000-meter deep trench and carry out scientific research.
TCM Services to Be Available in All Counties
A recent document issued by the CPC Central Committee and State Council sets the goal of making Traditional Chinese Medicine （TCM） services available in the clinics of all urban communities， towns， and townships by 2022.
According to the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine， by the end of 2018， 98.5 percent of medical centers in urban communities and 97 percent of town/township hospitals provided TCM services. In addition to this， the number of TCM institutions exceeded 60，000 nationwide， with their beds for in-patients standing at more than 1.2 million.
The recent document by the central authorities encourages the establishment of specialized TCM clinics， hospitals， and chain hospitals， proposes Internet+ TCM services， and plans to open a database for electronic medical records and electronic prescriptions.
Report Looks at Digital Talent in China
The Tsinghua SEM Center for Internet Development and Governance （CIDG） and LinkedIn China recently released a report on the flow of digitalizationrelated professionals in China.
Software and IT services and manufacturing have emerged as the two industries with the largest shares of digital talent， with around 20 percent each. In addition to information and communication technology（ICT） sectors， digital talent has started to congregate in areas such as manufacturing， consumer goods， finance， education， and corporate services.
From 2016 to 2018， the proportion of digital talent in software and IT services， finance， education， and other service industries increased year on year； while that in conventional sectors such as manufacturing， computer networking and hardware， and consumer goods was on decline. Contrasting this trend are the medical and transportation sectors， which have shown significant yearon-year improvements in terms of the appeal to digital professionals， with the medical sector performing especially well in 2018.
The report is based upon information drawn from about 910，000 qualified respondents of LinkedIn’s 48 million members in China.
