The U.S. Air Force is developing an airborne electronic terrain mapping system (AETMS) at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. This constantly revised display, based on digitally stored topographical data, will give pilots real-time perspectives of natural and anthropomorphic objects in front of the flight. Because it is an inertial system, it is not affected by the weather, darkness and interference. The Air Equipment Branch of the U.S. Air Force signed a $ 1 million contract with Hughes to finalize the design of the system and create a “pilot” prototype of the system by August 1982. The AETMS prototype will show those images that pilots want to see.
