据日刊《海洋时代》报道,日本邮电部电波研究所与冲电气工业公司合作研制的海下激光通信装置,已进入实用化阶段。该装置用水下电视照相机拍摄图像,通过海中的激光发射装置所发射的激光光束作为载波,传播到装备有激光接收装置的海面浮标站加以接收。已经确认:在透明度为8米的海域内,输出功率为1瓦的激光束可以将信号传送到50米的距离;在透明度更好时,传送距离也更远。由于这是一种不用传输线的通信方式,能够在船上见到海中的图像,适于拍摄移动着潜水艇等的图像。若能做到装置既小型而又稳定,则可指望今后得到广泛的应用。
