Many authorities who study the law and history of Hong Kong agree that there is a dual legal system in Hong Kong. The first element is the common law system established on the basis of the introduction of British law. This is the dominant one. The other element is the reservation of the laws and customs of the Qing Dynasty in China that were formerly ceded to the United Kingdom by Hong Kong. Regarding the latter, there has been controversy in the legal profession in Hong Kong.
