Gastrin is known as the most potent “nutri-tion hormone” of the gastric mucosa.It inducesincreased blood flow in the gastric mucosa andquickens DNA synthesis of the mucosal epithel-ial cells and cell mitosis.It also stimulates gas-tric acid and enzyme secretion as well as alimen-tary peristalsis,and relaxes sphincters (exceptthe inferior esophageal sphincter).The changeof gastrin concentration in serum is thus adesirable and relatively specific criterion forevaluating the peristaltic as well as secretoryfunctions of the digestive system.
