Plant cells are totipotent in nature during their life cycle and have the capacity to regenerate a whole plant from somatic cells through somatic embryogenesis (Ikeuchi et al., 2016).An appropriate chemical or mechanical induction is sufficient to induce this process.Compared with the discovery of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from fibroblasts in animal system by Shinya Yamanaks group in 2006, somatic embryogenesis in plants was first reported almost 70 years ago independently by Waris et al.in 1957, Steward et al.in 1958, and Reinert in 1958.
