The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is urging the FAA to inspect some of the high-pressure compressor disks of Pratt & Whitney’s JT8D more frequently in order to eliminate the non-inclusive failure caused by corrosion plaque. Recent work at NTSB has focused on JT8D-1 to -17 engines with low-usage high-pressure compressor disks due to the JT8D installed on a Boeing 737-232 passenger aircraft owned by France’s Aral Airlines in December 1995 -7B, its ninth-level high-pressure compressor disk damage, eventually leading to damage the entire disk. According to NTSB, on the way from Toulouse, France, to take off to London, the No. 9 engine HP9 compressor disk edge is separated and the debris enters the high-pressure compressor casing.
