甘蔗是一种生长期长的作物,在无霜期如粤、桂、闽等省的大部分地区,无论什么品种都可以达到成熟后榨糖;而在长江流域地区,每年有100多天的霜期,情况就不同了。有不少的品种在榨糖季节根本不能成熟,甚至距成熟期还很远,特别霜冻到来,蔗叶冻干,蔗茎因体内细胞活力和生理机能被破坏而变质,含糖份减少,给制糖工艺带来困难,以至炼不成糖。因此,在有霜冻地区,选种耐寒、早熟、高糖的甘蔗品种显得十分重要,尤其是耐寒性。大通湖农场位于北纬29.3°,于1975年引种台糖134、粤糖54/143、粤糖57/423等品种
