Joseph Cohen (Co-founder and CEO of Coursekit) : I was in Philadelphia at school and we decided we were gonna go and build this company full time, and…and leave school, and there was no question that New York was the place to do it.
Paul Stamatiou (Co-founder of Picplum) : The...the real draw of Silicon Valley to me, it’s…it’s hard to describe. I mean, it’s definitely the people. It’s also the fact that everyone out here is in some form of technology. I have…not only do I have lots of friends in technology, but start-ups are like the 1)norm. It’s not like “Oh, you’re gonna be unemployed for a while.” So many people actually want help you. Everyone wants to pay for…they wanna help give you advice, give you funding, office space, whatever.
Joseph: You go to San Francisco and you’re hangin’ in a 2)hip coffee shop; everyone’s talking about start-ups. But that’s not how you get inspiration. That’s not how you 3)come up with creative ideas.
The beauty of New York is that you have people in every area. You have people in fashion, you have people in education, and all the best of each of those classes. But what’s good about it is that you’re not isolated in this 4)bubble of everyone doing the same thing. You come up with businesses that work for the mainstream by being surrounded by people that aren’t the same as you.
Paul: There’s money out here. People are funding startups. It’s not a difficult thing to, you know, approach someone, ask them if they want to help advise you, if they want to invest. It’s…it’s the normal course of life out here.
Joseph: There is this romantic 5)appeal to the valley because that’s where the tech-titans are. Sort of like, if you, you know, people like to say “if you want to go make movies, you go to Hollywood.” New York is by far the best place on earth to be, because the best people in the world are here.
