Xi Jinping Speaks with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali on the Phone
On March 16, 2021, President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali.
Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Guyana, though geographically far apart, enjoy a deep and close friendship. The two countries have achieved fruitful results in bilateral cooperation in various fields since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The two-way trade increased last year despite the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating huge potential. The two sides should take the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic ties next year as an opportunity to promote Belt and Road cooperation and expand mutually beneficial collaboration in such areas as energy and infrastructure, pushing for more cooperation results, and lifting bilateral relations to higher levels. China stands ready to strengthen cooperation with Guyana in COVID-19 vaccines and continue to provide assistance and support within its capacity for Guyana’s economic and social development.
Xi Jinping indicated that China expects Guyana to play a positive role in promoting cooperation between China and Caribbean countries as a whole, as well as in developing the relationship between China and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Irfaan Ali expressed his gratitude for China’s generous assistance to Guyana’s fight against COVID-19. According to President Ali, Guyana firmly abides by the one China principle and considers China as the most important partner in its national development. Guyana hopes to advance Belt and Road cooperation with China to enhance cooperation in infrastructure and other fields. Guyana supports and is willing to promote the relationship between the CARICOM and China.
