太阳池是太阳能热利用领域中新崛起的一种构筑物和装置。它将集热器与蓄热器统一于一体,因而造价低、效率高、运行费用少,使用维护方便。有了太阳、土地、水和盐四样东西,就可以建造太阳池及其附属装置;而且可以根据热能的需求量来选定太阳池的面积。此外,尚可利用透明的塑料蜂窝来建造无盐太阳池。由此可知,从太阳池取得的热能,价格便宜,而且其热能的数量级也可小可大。
