Gerhard Berz, director of the geosciences research unit at the Munich-based reinsurance company, recently published an article in the 15th issue of STOP Disasters on the insurance industry and the Decade. The paper points out that the burden of natural disaster losses has increased over the past 30 years. If we compare the losses in the recent 10 years with the losses in the 1960s and ignore price increases, the economic losses caused by major natural disasters have increased five-fold and the insurance losses increased by 13 times. The sharp increase in losses caused by natural disasters is caused by many factors, the most important of which are the rate of population and asset growth and the concentration in large cities and areas prone to major disasters, especially in the coastal areas. In addition, as a result of potential climate and environmental changes, people are becoming more and more aware of the dramatic increase in extreme conditions, especially storms and precipitation.
