In September 2001, French and German military command authorities approved a plan to jointly use the satellite observing system for security and defense purposes. This is a major step toward the European plan for the integration of optical and radar satellite systems of various countries into a European spaceflight network. According to the participants in the plan, the signing of this agreement marks the first concrete step taken to establish an integrated European military space system. The system includes not only reconnaissance satellites, but also communications satellites, signal intelligence satellites, advanced warning satellites and space surveillance satellites.
