2017年4月6日,堪称中国电力建设史上迄今为止施工最难、海拔最高的西藏藏中500千伏输电联网建设工程全面开工。长达1984公里的藏中联网工程,以西藏芒康县500千伏芒康变电站为起点,途经左贡、八宿、波密、林芝、米林、朗县和山南地区,止于山南地区桑日县境内500千伏沃卡变电站,沿途将新建4座500千伏变电(开关)站,预计于2018年9月竣工投运。
