概算总投资64.5亿元的苏通大桥无疑是中国桥梁史上具有里程碑意义的一座桥。作为交通部规划的黑龙江嘉荫至福建南平国家重点干线公路跨越长江的重要通道,以及江苏省公路主骨架网“纵一”——赣榆至吴江高速公路的重要组成部分,它是我国建桥史上工程规模最大、综合建设条件最复杂的特大型桥梁工程:同时,建设苏通大桥对完善国家和江苏省干线公路网、促进区域均衡发展以及沿江整体开发,改善长江安全航运条件、缓解过江交通压力、保证航运安全等具有十分重要的意义。
